12、racteristics andtechnology of CD players, many of the terms andoperational concepts used in a DVD player aresimilar to what you may be familiar with from CDplayers and changers, or older video disc formatssuch as Laser Disc. However, if this is your firstDVD product, some of the terms used to descri
13、bethe features of a DVD player may be unfamiliar.The following explanations should solve some ofthe mysteries of DVD, and help you to enjoy allthe power and flexibility of the DVD format andthe DVD.With the arrival of DVD, disc data capacity hasincreased dramatically. On a DVD Video disc mostof this
14、 capacity is taken up by MPEG 2 video andthe multichannel movie soundtrack in DolbyDigital and/or DTS.This information is compressed.Aspect Ratio: This is a description of the widthof a video image in relation to its height.A con-ventional video screen is four units wide for everythree units of heig
15、ht, thats why the ratio is called”4:3”. Newer wide aspect ratio video displaysare 16 units wide for every nine units of height,making them more like the screen in a movie the-ater.The program material on a DVD may berecorded in either format and, in addition, youmay configure the DVD to play back in
16、 either for-mat, depending on the features recorded on adisc.Title: For a DVD,a title is defined as an entiremovie or program.There can be as many chapterswithin a title as the producers decide to include.Most discs include only one title,but some mayhave more than one,to give you a “DoubleFeature”p
17、resentation.Chapter: DVD programs are divided into chap-ters and titles. Chapters are the sub-sections pro-grammed into a single title on a disc. Chaptersmay be compared to the individual tracks on anaudio CD.RGB Video:This is a new form of video signalthat eliminates many of the artifacts of tradit
18、ionalcomposite video signals by splitting the signalinto the three fundamental colors Red, Green andBlue (RGB).With an RGB connection (via SCART),you will see greater picture resolution and elimi-nate many picture imperfections such as themoir patterns often seen on checkered pat-terned cloths. Howe
19、ver, in order to benefit fromRGB video, you must have a video display with anRGB compatible SCART input.Progressive scan: DVD offers progressive scanvideo outputs for use with compatible high-reso-lution televisions and projectors.Before DVD,noconsumer medium could store,transmit or displayvideo wit
20、h full resolution.To conserve bandwidth,analog compression (interlacing) is employed:firstthe odd-numbered lines of a frame are displayed,followed by the even-numbered lines.The result isthat only half of the video image is drawn at onetime;the viewers brain must reassemble the com-plete image.This
21、is acceptable,if the monitor isnot too large and if there is not too much motionin the image.Large displays and fast-movingimages reveal the limitations of this system.Thanks to DVDs immense data capacity,imagesare now stored intact (progressively),so that allthe lines in each frame (odd and even) a
22、re shownat the same time.But because most TVs cannothandle a progressive signal,all current DVD play-ers generate an interlaced output for compatibili-ty.Now,the Harman Kardon DVD is among theselect few DVD players with true progressive scanvideo output (NTSC and PAL) for use with com-patible TVs an
23、d CRT projectors and with all plas-ma,LCD and DLP display devices via the compo-nent video output.The result is 40% greater lightoutput than a conventional TV and a stunninglydetailed high definition image,along with analmost complete absence of visible scanlines andmotion artifacts.Of course,tradit
24、ional Y/Pr/Pbcomponent video,SCART,S-Video and compositevideo outputs are included for use with conven-tional televisions and projectors.Multiple Angle: DVDs have the capability toshow up to four different views of the samescene in a program.When a disc is encoded withmultiple-angle information, pre
25、ssing the Anglebutton will enable you to switch between thesedifferent views. Note that at present, few discstake advantage of this capability and, when theydo, the multiple-angle technology may only bepresent for short periods of time within the disc.Producers will usually insert some sort of icon
