Six Channel Digital Surround Sound via digital connectioncan only be obtained if your receiver is equipped with a DigitalMulti-channel decoder. To see the selected audio format of the current DVD in theStatus Window, press SYSTEM MENU.NTSC/PAL SettingsYou can switch the NTSC/PAL setting of the DVD player tomatch the video signal of your TV. This setting only affectsthe televisions on-screen display that shows the stop andsetup modes. You may select either NTSC or PAL. Tochange the DVD player setting to PAL or NTSC, follow thesteps below.1 Unplug the DVD player from the mains.2 Press and hold 9 and T, on the front of the DVD player.While holding 9 and T, plug in the mains.3 After PAL or NTSC appears on the display of the DVDplayer, release 9 and T at the same time. The PAL orNTSC indicator that appears on the display indicates thecurrent setting.4 To change the setting, press T within three seconds. Thenew setting (PAL or NTSC) will appear on the display.NTSC/PAL ConversionThis player is equipped with a NTSC/PAL conversionfeature to convert the video output of the disc to matchyour TV system. Thus, the AUTO format is most suitable for thebest picture quality.General ExplanationAbout this manualThis manual gives the basic instructions for operating theDVD player. Some DVDs require specific operation orallow only limited operation during playback which may notrespond to all operating commands. When this occurs, thesymbol Ä appears on the TV screen, indicating that theoperation is not permitted by the player or the disc.Remote control operation¶ Unless stated, all operations can be carried out with theremote control. Always point the remote control directly atthe player, making sure there are no obstructions in thepath of the infrared beam.Corresponding keys on the front panel of the player canalso be used.Menu bar operation¶ A number of operations can be carried out via the menubar on the screen. The menu bar can be accessed bypressing the cursor keys on the remote control.¶ Pressing SYSTEM MENU while the menu bar is displayedwill clear the menu bar from the screen.¶ The selected item will be highlighted and the appropriatecursor keys to operate will be displayed below the icon.¶ The symbols indicate more items are available atthe left/right of the menu bar. Press 1 or 2 to select theseitems.PREPARATION9EnglishPreparationGeneral Notes¶ Depending on your TV and other equipment you wish toconnect, there are various ways you could connect theplayer. Use only one of the connections described below.¶ Please refer to the manuals of your TV, VCR, Stereo Systemor other devices as necessary to make the bestconnections.¶ For better sound reproduction, connect the players audioout jacks to the audio in jacks of your amplifier, receiver,stereo or A/V equipment. See Connecting to OptionalEquipment.Caution: Make sure the DVD player is connected directlyto the TV. Set the TV to the correct video inputchannel. Do not connect the players audio out jack tothe phono in jack of your audio system. Do not connect your DVD-player via your VCR.The DVD image could be distorted by the copyprotection system.Connecting to a TV¶ Make one of the following connections, depending on thecapabilities of your existing equipment.1 Connect the SCART to the corresponding connector onthe TV using the SCART cable supplied (Z).If your TV is not equipped with a SCART you can selectone of the following alterative connections:S-Video (Y/C) connection1 Connect the Y/C S-VIDEO OUT jack on the DVD player tothe S-Video in jack on the TV using an optional S-Videocable (Y).2 Connect the Left and Right AUDIO OUT jacks of the DVDplayer to the audio left/right in jacks on the TV (A).CVBS connection1 Connect the (CVBS) VIDEO OUT jack on the DVD playerto the video in jack on the TV using the video cablesupplied (X).2 Connect the Left and Right AUDIO OUT jacks of the DVDplayer to the audio left/right in jacks on the TV (A).TVYXA ZCOAXIALDIGITAL AUDIO OUTPCM-MPEG2-Dolby Digital-DTSTV OUTLR (CVBS)VIDEO OUTAUDIO OUT S-VIDEO OUT(Y/C)SUBW.OPT OUTConnecting to OptionalEquipmentConnecting to an amplifier equipped withtwo channel analog stereo or DolbySurround1 Connect the Left and Right AUDIO OUT jacks of the DVDplayer to the audio left and right in jacks on your amplifier,receiver or stereo system, using the supplied audio cable(A).Connecting to an amplifier equipped withtwo channel digital stereo (PCM) or to anA/V receiver equipped with a multi-channeldecoder (Dolby Digital, MPEG 2 andDTS)1 Connect the players digital audio out jack (optical G orcoaxial F) to the corresponding in jack on your amplifier.Use an optional digital (optical G or coaxial F) audio cable.2 You will need to activate the players digital output (seePersonal Preferences).Digital Multi-channel soundDigital multi-channel connection provides the best soundquality. For this you need a multi-channel A/V receiver thatsupports one or more of the audio formats supported byyour DVD player (MPEG 2, Dolby Digital and DTS).Check the receiver manual and the logos on the front ofthe receiver.Connecting to an active subwoofer1 Connect the active subwoofer to the SUBWOOFER OUTaudio out jack (C). The subwoofer reproduces just the lowbass sound effect (e.g. explosions, the rumble of spaceships,etc.). Video shiftThe factory centres the video on your screen. Use thissetting to personalize the position of the picture on yourTV by scrolling it to the left or right. Colour settingsYou can select one of five predefined sets of colour settingsand one set (Personal) which you can define yourself. Personal colourAllows you to fine-tune the selected colour settingssaturation, brightness and contrast.PREPARATION11EnglishInitial Setup (Virgin Mode)GeneralIn Initial Setup you may have to set your preferences forsome of the players features. (not applicable for all models)OperationAfter switching on the player for the very first time, theInitial Setup Screen will appear.The menu for the first item to be set is displayed and thefirst option is highlighted.¶ Use the 43 keys to go through the options in the menu.The icon of the selected option will be highlighted.¶ Use OK to confirm your selection and to go to the nextmenu.Note: Preferences have to be set in the order of which the itemmenus will appear on the screen. The Initial Setup screen will only disappear after thesettings for the last item have been confirmed. If any keys other than 43 or OK are pressed, Ä willappear on the screen. If the player is switched off while setting personalpreferences, all preferences have to be set again afterswitching the player on again.The following items may have to be set in InitialSetup:Menu languageYou can choose from different languages. The On ScreenMenus will be displayed in the language available on theplayer.Audio languageYou can choose from different languages. If available on thedisc, the player will play the audio in the selected language.If the selected language is not available, speech will revertto the first spoken language on the disc.Subtitle languageYou can choose from different subtitle languages. If availableon the disc, subtitles will be in the language choosen. If theselected language is not available, subtitles will revert to thefirst subtitle language on the disc.TV ShapeIf you have a wide screen (16:9) TV, select 16:9.If you have a regular (4:3) TV, select 4:3.If you have a 4:3 TV, you can also select between:Letterbox for a wide-screen picture with black bars topand bottom, or Pan Scan, for a full-height picture with thesides trimmed. If a disc supports the format, the picture willbe shown accordingly.CountrySelect your country. This is used as input for the ParentalControl feature (see Access Control).Note: All these items may have to be set during Initial Setup.After that, they can always be changed in the PersonalPreferences Menu.Menu Bar/Status WindowAs there are multiple menu-bars, the items on the menu-bar are arranged according to usage, availability of directaccess keys. Ifthe selections are numbered, press the appropriatenumerical key; if not, use the 3/4,1/2 keys to highlightyour selection, then press OK.¶ The currently playing title and chapter number aredisplayed.¶ Playback may stop at the end of the Title, and then mayreturn to the DVD menu. To go on to the next title, pressB.¶ To stop playback, press 9.a167 The default screen will appear, giving information aboutthe current status.¶ You can resume playback from the point at which youstopped playback. Press B; when you see the Resume icon. on the screen, press B again.a167 The RESUME feature applies not only to the disc in theplayer, but also to the last four discs you have played. Simplyreload the disc and press RESUME on the remotecontrol. Or, press B when you see the Resume icon . onthe screen, then press B again.Note: DVDs may have a region code.
