L iL5RUBLE AND NOISE LEVEL:Runble is any low frequency disEurbance in the reproductionof phonograph record due Eo the vibration of Ehe motor orEhe Eurntable drive system. Rumble is most easily studiedby playing a record with unmodulated grooves and observingthe noise output. The noise level present in the recordscurrently available is at least equivalent and in mostcases less than the rumble level of Ehe THORENS TD-150model turntable. The objective measuremenE of the rumble level of a turntableis not a s imple rnatter. It requires elaborate insErumentationand exEreme care. The results may also differ with themeasurement method employed. The THORENS TD-150 modelturntables are measured according to the DIN 45539 sEandards. As an approximate measure a subj ective evaluation of therunble level rrrEly be observed.NORMAL TZED AUD IT ION COND IT IONSEvery subj ective evaluation of the rumble and noise level ofa turntable requires that well defined, audition conditions bereal ized ,A record should be selecEed, for auditioning, that is widelyaccepted as an excellenE orchesEra recording and not onewith an overall too low level and lacking bass. Then, playinga Fortissimo passage, the volume control should be adjustedto obtain complete musical pleasure, at a normal listeninglevel without any disturbing element. The bass conErol onthe preamplifier should be adjusted Eo obtain as natural asound as possible. For well designed amplifiers, Ehisshould be aEtained very near Eo the theoretical equalLzationcharacEeristics (tfott positions of Ehe bass and treble controls). These adjustments of volune and tone controls should not bemodif ied f or the nrmble level evaluation which should be made, when a special test record is not available, on the veryfirsE unmodulated grooves of a good record, before the groovewhere the recording amplifier has been swiEched oD, and thenon a passage with the minimum recorded level.FurEhermore, the evaluaEionthe room where best uusicaljusE near a loudspeaker.should be made from the place inresults are obtained and RadioFans.CN 收音机爱 好者资料库PAGE : 2/L5If under Ehese conditions, Ehe rumble level of the turntableis judged disturbing, Ehe following tests nay help to Eracethe cause of Ehe trouble. For analysis of Ehe noise, firsElift the pick-up off the record without changing the controlsetting; the remaining noise will be hum. Shut off the turn-table , if the hum rernains it may be concluded tha t the hum isdue to an incomplete or incorrect installation of the pick-upcarEridge, the improper wiring sysEem is employed (3 wire or5 wire) for Ehe parEicular manufacEure of carEridge or theamplifier is at fault. The amplifier mayand observing theshould be checkedThe wiring sys tempick-up carEridgebe checked by short-circuiting the inputshum level. If it is unchanged the amplifierfur ther .(3 wire or 5 wire) as recommended by themanufacturer should be employed. If when the turntable moEorcause nay be attributed to(rumble) . LubricaEion andfollowed as described.ACOUSTIC FEEDBACKis shut off the hum ceases. TheEurnLable and / or motor vibrationsservice procedures should beThe very low frequency sounds coming out of the loudspeakersrnlly Eransmit appreciable vibraLions to the turntable. ThecabineE supporting this turntable, scting as a resonaEor, mayamplify Ehese vibrations. This will result in higher noiselevels, and in some cass, in instability or feedback. Theacoustic isolation of the THORENS model TD-150 turntable maybe adj us Eed as described in Ehe section Chass is suspens iont .If the cabinet is acting as a resonaEor, it may becomenecessary Eo find another place for the turnEable if compleEestability is to be obtained.SERVICE PROECDURESRUBBER BELT-S 8OO-574Examine Ehe rubber belt by stretching it. If cracks appearin the rubber, the belt is dried out and should be replaced. Before replacing the belt, examine Ehe surface of Ehe motorpulley and ouEer skirt of the inner turntable for traces ofrubber deposits. Clean Ehese surfaces with a soft clothsaturated in denatured alcohol and replace the belEPAGE : 3/L5If Ehe rubber belE makes a slapping noise, too rnuch moisturein the belE may be the cause. Dust your fingers, lightly, with talcum powder and pass the belt through the powder to drytt it or absorb the mois Eure.MOTOR S 804-550 (60H2)s 800- 5s0 (soHz)The motor bearings are of Ehe oi1 retaining type with an oilreserve. Under normal use, the initial lubrication, made aEthe f actory, should be suf f icient f or about I ,000 hours t t:Lln.When the need for a new lubricaEion becomes appareot, proceedas follows:MOTOR UPPER BEARINGPlace a few drops of ROB oil on toP of the bearing, wherethe shaft comes out of the top motor shield.MOTOR LOWER BEARINGSOil should be put on Ehe lower part of the shaft where iLex Eend s f rom Ehe mot,or hous ing .MOTOR AZIMUTHIf Ehe rubber belr (S 800- 574) slips off the motor pulley orrides on Ehe flange of Ehe motor pulley, causing incorrectspeeds (33 L/3 or 45 RPM) the azimuth of the motor inrelaEion to the inner turntable plaEter may have to becorrected. This may be accornplished by adjusEing the screwlocaEed between the moEor pulley and inner turnEable platter.Refer to diagram number 1.The condition of the bearing well and turntable shaft, andtheir lubrication, nly be checked over a period of time byperiodically noting how nany revolutions may be counLed fromthe moment the Eurntable is aE full running speed (33 Ll3 rpm)until the turntable stops. The rubber belt should be removedfor Ehis test and the turntable rotated by hand to achieveoperating speed as observed with a stroboscope.
