Cover theunit when not in use. Dust it regularly with a soft, clean brush. Careful attention to thesedetails will be time well spent, and this product will reward you with years of trouble freeoperation.2IntroductionCongratulations on your purchase of the Phonic MAR 1 Reference Amplifier. Like otherPhonic MAR series power amplifiers MAR 2/4/6, this unit is designed to provide a goodcombination of power, audio clarity, reliability and durability. Especially, optimized forstudio monitoring applications and moderate-power live performance setups, the ampsmain features include:? 150 watts per channel into 4 ohms, 100 watts per channel into 8 ohms? Front panel LED Indicators for Protect, Clip & Signal? Detented dB gain controls? Built-in protection system for short circuit, DC, and temperature monitoring? Power-up muting? -26dB signal presence LEDs on each channel? Quality Neutrik combo Input connectors for professional use? Stereo/Parallel switch? Ground floating switch? Massive, custom-designed extruded heat sinks ( individual for each channel) forcool operation? No Ventilation fan is needed, allowing for quiet operation and reduced ambient noisein the studio.? Extremely low noise and distortion, suitable for quiet applications such as recordingstudio, church and museum.Precautions1. When first powering-up the amp, keep the amplifier Gain Controls all the way off, inorder to block potentially damaging or annoying sounds caused by defective cables orhookups. When turning up the Gain, do it gradually, until normal operation is verified. These precautions are necessary with all high-power amplifiers, since they haveenough power to blow most speakers in abnormal situations.2. Check the AC Voltage before connecting the AC plug.3. The amplifier is protected from surges in power-line voltage by the fuses. Should yourunit ever fail to power-up, first unplug the power cord, and then replace the fuse withexact type and value.About This ManualPlease be reminded that a power amplifier is a high-current, high-power deviceand should be treated with respect and care. Please read this manual beforeconnecting and operating your unit and file it in a safe place for future reference.3MAR 1 Power AmplifierFront Panel Description1. Gain ControlsThese two knobs are the level controls forChannel one and two respectively.Turning clockwise will increase its gain, and counter clockwise will decrease itsgain. Please always power-up with thevolume all the way down, and increasevolume slowly to make sure that noconditions exist which could annoy youraudience or harm your speakers. 2. Protect LED IndicatorThe MAR1 features several types ofprotection to prevent damage to thecircuitry during turn-on or fault conditions. If the LEDs light up, this indicates that oneof the various protections is safeguardingthe different sections of the amplifier andin these cases, the power output isnormally switched off until normaloperating conditions are restored.? Loudspeaker protection: in the eventof malfunction, a sensor located onthe power outputs is able to break thecircuit avoiding that current peaksreach the speakers and damagethem.? Thermal protection on the heatsink: Ifthe amp overheats, thermal shutdownprotects the circuitry until thetemperature is reduced to a safelevel.? Short circuit protection: The ProtectLED Indicator will also light up if thespeaker terminals are short circuited,or the impedance of the load is toolow. In these circumstances, theProtect LED will stay on until the faultcondition is rectified. Some protection situations require theamplifier to be switched off and thenback on for normal operatingconditions to be restored.3. Clip LED IndicatorThe LEDs light up at clipping status, whenever any conditions occur that couldleak to non-linearility, such as an out-of-spec load and waveform distortion.Because of the MAR 1s ability to enterand exit clipping with as few audibleartifacts as possible, you may not hearany distortion even if the indicator flashes. In general, a few flashes every now andthen will not be a problem. However, ifthe LEDs flash often or remain on for anyextended period of time, then turn downthe volume controls to reduce the signallevel going to the MAR 1. If this doesnt512344solve the problem, check your outputcables and speakers.4. Signal “Status” LED IndicatorEach channel of the MAR 1 features asignal LED to show that there is an audiosignal at the input to the channel. Thethreshold for the indicator is 26 dB,which should be enough to avoid noisetriggering the LED.5. Power SwitchThe power ON/Off switch with an LEDindicator.Always start with Gain Control (1) allthe way down before powering-up toavoid abnormal sound from defectivecables or hookups.Back Panel Description6. Ch1/Ch2 Input (NeutrikConnector)Quality Neutrik Connectors are providedfor balanced XLR and 1/4” inputs, whichare commonly, used for both mobile andinstallation set-ups. They provide a goodcombination of ease of connection andresistance to corrosion. The XLR inputsare wired as per the following convention:These type of jacks feature on muchaudio equipment and are convenient if theamp is frequently connected anddisconnected, such as for mobile set-up.The plugs used should wired as perthe following convention:7. Stereo/ Parallel SwitchIn Stereo operation, two separate signalsare treated separately by Channels 1 and2 of the amplifiers. In Parallel operation, One signal istreated by both channel 1 and 2 of theamplifier. In other words, a signalconnected to Input Ch1 or Ch2 (6) is sentto both Output Ch1 and CH2 (9).This switch should be used when the+-gndt i pr i n g s l e e v e+-gnd67895Amplifier is off; otherwise thespeakers components could bedamaged.8. Ground Lift SwitchThis switch allows the circuit and chassisgrounds to be separated in case on aground conflict. In normal use the switchshould be in the Ground On position.Lifting the ground (Floating position) mayresolve the ground conflict, but whichmeans that circuit grounding depends onother connected components.Deficiencies in other componentsgrounding will affect the sound and aserious electric fault with the amplifiercould damage other components in thesystem. For the best combination of safety andperformance,it is highly recommendedto keep the switch in the “Ground On”position,9. Binding Post Output Ch1/ Ch2These are suitable for banana plugs, spade lugs or bare wires. Spade lugs andbare wires should both be screwed donetightly to exclude oxygen, and care shouldbe taken to avoid loose strands of wirethat may cause short circuits.Sp e a k e rSp e a k e r6Hook-up #1 Studio Monitor Amp/ Sound ReinforcementThe MAR1 is ideal for driving near-field or other reference speakers. For auditorium andlive music use, the MAR 1 has sufficient power to drive a set of small-to-medium size clubspeakers.o u t p u t so u t p u t si n p u t ss p e a k e r sMAR1 amplifierc o m p r e s s o r o r e q u a l i z e rPEQ 3400m i x e rIMPACT 167Hook-up #2 Bi-Amp Sound ReinforcementBiamplification often provides better live sound and greater efficiency by splitting the audiosignal into two different channels.
