High-Cut (Low-Pass) Filter Switch:Placing this switch in the ON position acti-vates circuitry that cuts out all audio inputsignals above 120Hz.This allows the SUB-TS14 to focus its power on reproducing thelow-frequency portion of the signal, avoidinginefficiency and distortion. Engage this filterwhen using the Speaker-Level Inputs ,or when using the Line-Level Full-RangeInputs , unless your receiver or processorprocesses its line-level output using a low-pass filter. The filter has no effect when theSUB Input is used. Music-Sense On/Off Switch:Whenplaced in the AUTO position, and when theMaster Power Switch is turned on,theSUB-TS14 will automatically turn itself on orplace itself in the Standby mode, depending onwhether it is receiving an audio signal.Whenthis switch is placed in the ON position,theSUB-TS14 will remain on,whether or not it isreceiving an audio signal. An LED located on top of the SUB-TS14indicates whether the SUB-TS14 is in theON or STANDBY state when used with theMusic-Sense On/Off Switch in theAUTO position. The LED is lit blue to indi-cate that the SUB-TS14 is receiving an Subwoofer-Level Control High-Cut (Low-Pass) Filter Switch Music-Sense On/Off Switch Phase Switch Line-Level Subwoofer (SUB) Input Line-Level Full-Range Inputs Speaker-Level Outputs Speaker-Level Inputs Master Power Switch AC Power CordHKTS 14 OM 11/4/03 11:32 AM Page 7 SUB-TS14 SUB-TS14 harman/kardon harman/kardon 46SUB-TS14 SUBWOOFER AMPLIFIER PANEL CONTROLS AND CONNECTIONSSUB-TS14 SUBWOOFER AMPLIFIER PANEL CONTROLS AND CONNECTIONSaudio signal and is turned on, and the LED is lit amber to indicate that no signal is beingreceived and the SUB-TS14 is in Standbymode. When the Music-Sense On/Off Switch is in the ON position, the LED will be litblue, whether or not an audio signal is present. When the Master Power Switch isturned off, the LED goes dark, no matterwhich position the Music-Sense On/OffSwitch is in. Phase Switch: This switch determineswhether the SUB-TS14 subwoofers piston-like action moves in and out in phase withthe main speakers. If the speakers were toplay out of phase, the sound waves pro-duced by the subwoofer would be cancelledout, reducing bass response. This phenome-non depends in part on the relative place-ment of the speakers in the room. In mostcases, the Phase Switch should be leftin the NORMAL position. However, itdoes no harm to experiment with the PhaseSwitch , and you may leave it in theposition that maximizes bass response. Line-Level Subwoofer (SUB) Input:Connect the subwoofer output of a receiverwith digital surround sound decoding, suchas Dolby* Digital or DTS, to this input.Thisinput bypasses the SUB-TS14s internalcrossover circuitry, and should only be usedwith a filtered signal. If your receiver does nothave digital decoding, you should use theLine-Level Full-Range Inputs instead. Line-Level Full-Range Inputs: Connectthe line-level subwoofer output or preamp out-put(s) of your receiver or amplifier to theseinputs. If your receiver does not have a sepa-rate subwoofer output, use a Y-adaptor (notsupplied) to bridge the receivers preamp out-put to the main amp input for that channel, and connect the long end of the adaptor to the corresponding line-level input on theSUB-TS14.If your receiver has only a singlesubwoofer output, you may connect it to either the left or right line-level input on theSUB-TS14,and no Y-adaptor is needed. Speaker-Level Outputs: If you areusing the Speaker-Level Inputs on theSUB-TS14, you should connect these bind-ing post terminals to your front left and rightspeakers, remembering to maintain polarityby connecting the (+) terminal on the SUB-TS14 subwoofer to the (+) terminal on thespeaker, and the () terminal on the SUB-TS14 subwoofer to the () terminal on thespeaker. If you are not using the Speaker-Level Inputs , then connect your frontleft and right speakers directly to your receiv-er or amplifier. See pages 9 through 12 forfurther information on speaker connections. Speaker-Level Inputs: Connect thesebinding-post terminals to the main left andright speaker terminals of your receiver oramplifier, if your receiver or amplifier doesnot have a line-level subwoofer output.Remember to maintain polarity by connectingthe (+) terminal on the receiver/amplifier to the(+) terminal on the SUB-TS14 subwoofer, andthe () terminal on the receiver/amplifier to the() terminal on the SUB-TS14 subwoofer. Master Power Switch: Place thisswitch in the “” position to power-on theSUB-TS14 subwoofer. The SUB-TS14 willthen be either in the Standby mode or com-pletely on, depending on the position of theMusic-Sense On/Off Switch . AC Power Cord: Make sure to plug this cord into an active, unswitched electrical out-let for proper operation of the SUB-TS14.The cord should not be plugged into theaccessory outlets found on some audiocomponents.HKTS 14 OM 11/4/03 11:32 AM Page 8 SUB-TS14 SUB-TS14 harman/kardon harman/kardon 5Dolby* Digital or DTS(or OtherDigital Surround Mode) ConnectionUSE THIS INSTALLATION METHOD FORDOLBY DIGITAL, DTS OR OTHER DIGITALSURROUND PROCESSORS:Use the line-level input jack marked SUB for the Low-Frequency Effects channel.Connect this jack to the subwoofer output or LFE output on your receiver or amplifier.Connect each speaker to the correspondingspeaker terminals on your receiver or amplifier.Make sure youve configured your surroundsound processor for “Subwoofer On. ” Thefront left, front right, center and surroundspeakers should all be set to “Small. ”When all connections have been made, plugthe AC power cord on the subwoofer intoan AC outlet.SPEAKER CONNECTIONSLINE LEVEL INLRSUBSUB/LFE OutSUB-TS14 SubwooferReceiverFrontLeftSurroundLeftFrontRightSurroundRightCenterSurroundRightFrontRightSurroundLeftFrontLeftCenter + + + + +HKTS 14 OM 11/4/03 11:32 AM Page 12 SUB-TS14 SUB-TS14 harman/kardon harman/kardon 6SPEAKER CONNECTIONS 11Dolby Pro Logic* (Non-Digital) Line LevelUSE THIS INSTALLATION METHOD FORDOLBY PRO LOGIC APPLICATIONS (NOTDOLBY DIGITAL, DTS OR OTHER DIGITALPROCESSING),WHERE THE RECEIVER/PROCESSOR IS EQUIPPED WITH A SUBWOOFER OUTPUT, OR A VOLUME-CONTROLLED PREAMP (LINE-) LEVEL OUTPUT:Use the supplied RCA-type interconnectcable to connect the line-level subwooferoutput on your receiveror amplifier to eitherthe left or right Line-Level Full-RangeInput on the SUB-TS14 subwoofer.Use both the left and right inputs on thesubwoofer if your receiver or processor hasboth left and right line-level outputs.
