Remember to maintain polarity by connecting the (+) terminal on the receiver/amplifier to the (+) terminal on theHKSUB 12 subwoofer, and the () terminal onthe receiver/ amplifier to the () terminal on theHKSUB 12 subwoofer. Speaker-Level Outputs: If you areusing the Speaker-Level Inputs onthe HKSUB 12, connect these binding postterminals to your front left and right speakers, remembering to maintain polarity by con-necting the (+) terminal on the HKSUB 12subwoofer to the (+) terminal on the speak-er, and the () terminal on the HKSUB 12subwoofer to the () terminal on the speak-er. If you are not using the Speaker-LevelInputs , connect your front left and right speakers directly to your receiver or amplifier. See pages 9 through 12 forfurther information on speaker connections. Line-Level Full-Range Inputs: Connectthe full-range,unfiltered line-level subwooferoutput or preamp output(s) of your receiver oramplifier to these inputs. If your receiver doesnot have a separate subwoofer output, use aY-adapter (not supplied) to bridge the receiverspreamp output to the main amp input for thatchannel, and connect the long end of theadapter to the corresponding line-level inputon the HKSUB 12.If your receiver has only asingle subwoofer output, you may connect itto either the left or right line-level input on theHKSUB 12,and no Y-adapter is needed. If your receiver does not have a filteredsubwoofer output, you should use the Line-Level Full-Range Inputs instead. Phase Switch: This switch determineswhether the HKSUB 12 subwoofers piston-like action moves in and out in phase withthe main speakers. If the speakers are outof phase, the sound waves produced bythe subwoofer will be cancelled out, reduc-ing bass response. This phenomenondepends in part on the relative placementof the speakers in the room. In most cases, the Phase Switch should be left in theNORMAL position. However, it does noharm to experiment with the PhaseSwitch , and you may leave it in theposition that maximizes bass response. Music-Sense On/Off Switch:Whenthis switch is placed in the AUTO position, and when the Master Power Switch isturned on,the HKSUB 12 will automaticallyturn on or place itself in the Standby mode, depending on whether it is receiving an audiosignal. When this switch is placed in the ONposition, the HKSUB 12 will remain on,whether or not it is receiving an audio signal. LED Indicator: This LED indicateswhether the HKSUB 12 is in the ONor STANDBY state when used with the Music-Sense On/Off Switch inthe AUTO position. The LED is lit greento indicate that the HKSUB 12 is receivingan audio signal and is turned on, and theLED is lit red to indicate that no signal isbeing received and the HKSUB 12 is inStandby mode. When the Music-Sense On/Off Switch is in the ON position, the LED will be lit green, whether or not an audio signal is present. When the Master Power Switch isturned off, the LED goes dark, no matterwhich position the Music-Sense On/OffSwitch is in. High-Cut (Low-Pass) Filter Switch:Placing this switch in the ON position acti-vates circuitry that filters out all audio inputsignals above the setting of the CrossoverFrequency Control .This allows theHKSUB 12 to focus its power on reproduc-ing the low-frequency portion of the signal, avoiding inefficiency and distortion. Engagethis filter when using the Speaker-LevelInputs , or when using the Line-LevelFull-Range Inputs , unless your receiv-er or processor processes its line-level out-put using a low-pass filter. The filter has noeffect when the SUB Input is used. Crossover Frequency Control: Adjustthis control to set the highest frequency theHKSUB 12 will reproduce. You shouldbegin by setting it slightly above the lowest frequency that your main speakersare capable of reproducing. You may safely adjust the crossover frequency later as you listen to different programmaterials. This control will have no effect ifyou are using the Line-Level Subwoofer(SUB) Input , or if you have set theHigh-Cut (Low-Pass) Filter Switch to the OFF position. See page 14 formore information on adjusting thecrossover setting. Subwoofer-Level Control: Volumemay be adjusted using the Subwoofer-Level Control.Turn the control clockwise to increase the HKSUB 12s volume, orcounterclockwise to decrease it. Master Power Switch: Press thisrocker switch at the “” mark to power-onthe HKSUB 12 subwoofer. The HKSUB 12will then be either in the Standby mode orcompletely on, depending on the positionof the Music-Sense On/Off Switch . AC Power Cord: Plug this cordinto an active, unswitched electrical outlet for proper operation of the HKSUB 12.The cord should not be plugged into the accessory outlets found on some audiocomponents.4H HK KS SU UB B1 12 2 h ha ar rmma an n/ /k ka ar rd do on n 4 SPEAKER CONNECTION GUIDESPEAKER CONNECTION GUIDEAnalog Receiver/Processor Speaker-Level ConnectionsUse this installation method for analog receivers or processors that do not have digital processing or bass-management programming, and where the receiver/processordoes not have a subwoofer output,or a volume-controlled preamp (line-) level output:Connect your receiver or amplifiers front left and right speaker terminals to the left and right Speaker-Level Input terminals on the HKSUB 12 subwoofer that are marked “High Level In.” Connect the left and right Speaker-Level Output terminals on the HKSUB 12 subwooferthat are marked “High Level Out” to the corresponding terminals on the back of your front left and right speakers.Connect your receiver or amplifiers center, surround, and surround back speaker terminals to the corresponding terminals on the back of your centerand surround speakers. When all connections have been made, plug the AC Power Cord on the subwoofer into an AC outlet.Front LeftSurround LeftSurroundBack LeftCenterFront RightSurround RightSurroundBack RightSurroundBack LeftSurroundBack RightReceiveror Amplifier + + + + +HKSUB 12SubwooferRLSurroundRightFrontRightSurroundLeftFrontLeftCenterHKP1209 SUB12 OM 10/23/02 9:28 PM Page 125H HK KS SU UB B1 12 2 h ha ar rmma an n/ /k ka ar rd do on n SPEAKER CONNECTION GUIDE 5SPEAKER CONNECTION GUIDESubwooferOutFrontLeftSurroundLeftFrontRightSurroundRightHKSUB 12SubwooferCenterLine-LevelLR + + + + +SurroundBack LeftSurroundBack RightSurroundBack LeftSurroundBack RightSurroundRightFrontRightSurroundLeftFrontLeftCenterReceiver or AmplifierAnalog Receiver/Processor Line-Level ConnectionsUse this installation method for analog receivers or processors that do not have digital processing or bass-management programming, and where the receiver/processor isequipped with an unfiltered subwooferoutput, or a volume-controlled preamp(line-) level output:Use the supplied RCA-type patch cord toconnect the line-level subwoofer output onyour receiveror amplifier to either the left orright Line-Level Full-Range Input onthe HKSUB 12 subwoofer.
