This button MUST be pressed into operate the unit regardless of thestatus of the Power Switch at thebottom of the front panel. To turn theunit off and prevent the use of theremote control, this switch should bepressed until it pops out to extendfrom the front panel so that the word“OFF” may be read at the top of theswitch.NOTE: In normal operation thisswitch may be left in the “on”position.2 System Power Control: Whenthe Main Power Switch 1 ispressed in, press this button to turnon the AVR55, press it again to turnthe unit off. Note that the PowerIndicator surrounding the switch 3will turn green when the unit is on.3 Power Indicator: This LED willilluminate in amber when the unit isin the Standby mode, to signal thatthe unit is ready to be turned on.When the unit is in operation theindicator will turn green.4 Memo Button: This button isused to enter settings for speakermodes, tuner presets and delay time after making the appropriateselection.5 Headphone Jack: This jack maybe used to listen to the AVR55s out-put through a pair of headphones.Be certain that the headphoneshave a standard 14 stereo phoneplug.6 FM Mode: Press this button toselect the stereo or mono mode forFM tuning. In the STEREO mode aSTEREOindicator will illuminate inthe information display, and stereoreception will be provided when sta-tions are transmitting stereo signals.In the MONO mode the left and rightsignals from stereo broadcasts willbe mixed together and reproducedthrough all channels. Select MONOfor better reception of weak signals. 7 Speaker Switch: This switchcontrols the front left/right speakers.For normal operation it is pressed inand sound is heard through the frontspeakers. To silence the frontleft/right speakers, push the buttononce until it is in the “out” position.When the front speakers are turnedoff sound will continue to be heardthrough the center and rear speakersand the headphone jack.8 AM/FM: Press this button toselect the tuner as the AVR55s inputsource. When it is first pressed thelast station tuned will appear. Pressit again to change between AM andFM bands.9 Tuning Button: Press the left side of the button to tune lowerfrequency stations and the right sideof the button to tune higher frequencystations. When a station with a strongfrequency is tuned, the TUNEDindicator will illuminate in theInformation Display 3 5. A brief (1/2 second) press of the button willmanually tune to the next frequencyincrement, while pressing and hold-ing the button for a longer period willautomatically tune to the next stationwith a signal strong enough foracceptable reception.) CD: Press this button to selectthe device connected to the CDInput jacks d as the listeningsource.! Tape1/Monitor: Press this buttonto select the device connected tothe Tape 1 Play jacks as the lis-tening source. When the green lightabove the button is illuminated, thefront panel jacks are selected. Speaker Mode Selector: Pressthis button to configure the AVR55for the type of speakers used in yoursystem. See page 18 for details onusing this button. Surround Off: Press this buttonto turn the surround modes off to listen to a source in traditional two-channel stereo from the frontleft/right speakers only. Bass Control: Turn this control tomodify the low frequency output ofthe left/right channels by as much as10dB. Set this control to a suitableposition for your taste and roomacoustics. Surround Mode: Press thisbutton to select one of the analogsurround processing modes (DolbyPro Logic, Dolby 3 Stereo, Theater,Hall, Stadium and Church) for alistening session. Treble Control: Turn this controlto modify the high frequency outputof the left/right channels by as muchas 10dB. Set this control to asuitable position for your taste androom acoustics. Digital Mode Selector: Pressthis button to listen to a source whena PCM or Dolby Digital (AC-3*)signal is present.NOTE: Dolby Digital may only beused with the CD, TV, DVD, Vid 1and Vid 2 inputs. Balance Control: Turn thiscontrol to change the relative volumefor the front left/right channels.NOTE: For proper operation of thesurround modes this control shouldbe at the midpoint, or “12 Oclock”position. Digital Input Selector: When theDigital Mode Selector has beenpressed, this button is used to selectthe type of digital input to be used.NOTE: The coax or optical inputsmay be selected with the CD, TV,DVD, Vid 1 and Vid 2 inputs. The RF input may be used with the Vid 1input only. Night Mode: Press this button to activate the “Night” mode, pre-venting a loud playback when thedigital modes are in use. Video 2 Inputs: These jack maybe used to temporarily connect anaudio/video source such as a videogame or camcorder to the AVR55. To select these jacks as the input,press the Vid 2 Front/Rear button( until the green LED above thatbutton is illuminated. Contour: Press this button whenlistening at low levels to activatespecial circuits that compensate for the response of the human ear at lower volumes. In the off positionthe unit will provide flat frequencyresponse. Volume Control: Turn the knobclockwise to increase volume, counterclockwise to decrease thevolume. Note that approximately tworevolutions of the knob are requiredto go from no output to maximumvolume. Subwoofer Level Adjust:Press these buttons to raise or lowerthe output to the subwoofer channel.These buttons should be used dur-ing normal listening sessions fortouch-up adjustments, not when thetest signal is being used for majorsystem alignment.3 3Center Level Adjust: Pressthese buttons to raise or lower theoutput to the center channel. Thesebuttons should be using duringnormal listening sessions for touch-up adjustments, not when the testsignal is being used for majorsystem alignment.3 4Surround Level Adjust:Press these buttons to raise or lowerthe output to the surround channels.These buttons should be used dur-ing normal listening sessions fortouch-up adjustments, not when thetest signal is being used for majorsystem alignment.3 5Information Display: This display delivers messages and status indications to help you operatethe receiver. Refer to the separatediagram for complete explanation ofthe FL display.3 6Remote Sensor Window: Thesensor behind this window receivesinfrared signals from the remote con-trol.
