Standby mode is a low powermode where the power consumption is less than 10 Watts. The unit . esu n i ton nehw edom ybdna tS n i t f e l eb d l uohsWhen the 840W is switched out of Standby mode it will automaticallycheck for faults and allow the power amplifier stages to stabilise beforeun-muting the speaker outputs.Note: The protection LEDs will flash whilst this check is being done.OutputIndicates that the Left or Right output is active. The LED (light-emittingdiode) is on for an active output, off for inactive (i.e. muted).ProtectionIf this LED is constantly on the 840W has detected a fault on either theLeft or Right channel and is protecting itself.ClippingThis LED indicates that the 840W has detected that either the Left orRight channel is being overdriven or clipped.Clipping distortion is caused at high volume levels when the outputsignal attempts to go outside the maximum voltage that the connectedpre-amplifier can provide, causing the tops of the signal to flatten off. When the 840W detects clipping this LED will briefly flash. If the clippingreaches a dangerous amount that could damage the amplifier orattached speakers the unit will then go into protection.BridgedThis LED indicates that the 840W is being used in Bridged mode. (TheMono LED will also be illuminated.)MonoThis LED indicates that the 840W is being used in a Mono mode.BridgedClippingOutputStandby / OnMonoProtectionLeftRightClippingOutputProtectionazur 840WClass XD Power AmplifierFront panel controls121234234566543ClippingBridgedClippingOutputStandby / OnMonoProtectionLeftRightClippingOutputProtectionazur 840WClass XD Power AmplifierBridgedMonoBridgedClippingOutputStandby / OnMonoProtectionLeftRightClippingOutputProtectionazur 840WClass XD Power AmplifierBridgedMonoBridgedClippingOutputStandby / OnMonoProtectionLeftRightClippingOutputProtectionazur 840WClass XD Power AmplifierBridgedMonoCambridge Audio Azur 840W Power AmplifierFront Panel Contols4f fOnOLoop OutputInputBalanced Audio - RightUnbalancedAudio - RightInputLoop OutputInputLoop OutputOutControl BusTriggerIR EmitterInOut/ThruInInLoop OutputInputBalanced Audio - LeftUnbalancedAudio - Leftazur 840W Class XDTM Power AmplifierPower Rating: 230V AC 50HzMax Power Consumption: 1600Wwww.cambridge-Designed in London, EnglandPower ACPlease ensure that loudspeaker terminals are fully tightenedVeuillez sassurer que les bornes de lenceinte sont entirement serresStereoMonoBi-AmpBridgedLoudspeaker Terminals - RightImpedance 4 - 8 ohmsBridgedBridgedonly! Please ensure that loudspeaker terminals are fully tightenedVeuillez sassurer que les bornes de lenceinte sont entirement serresLoudspeaker Terminals - LeftImpedance 4 - 8 ohmsBridgedonly!Manufactured in an ISO9001 approved facilityThis device complies with part 15 of the FCC Rules. In each case, the red terminalis the positive output and the black terminal is the negative output. Other dual mono schemes are also possible if two 840Ws are used.Refer to later sections of this manual for more information.Use speakers with a nominal impedance of between 4-8 ohms. Careshould be taken to ensure no stray strands of wire short theloudspeaker outputs together. Please ensure that the loudspeakerterminals have been tightened completely to provide a good electricalconnection. It is also possible for the sound quality to be affected if thescrew terminals are loose.Audio input typesThe 840W features either unbalanced (phono/RCA) or balanced (XLR)input connections. Either type may be used but not both at the sametime. The balanced connection is the higher quality option and canreject noise and interference in the cable when used with otherequipment that supports this function. An XLR connector is wired Pin 1- Ground; Pin 2 - Hot (in-phase); Pin 3 - Cold (phase-inverted).Use the Left and Right Input Type switch (Item 4) to select theconnection type you wish to use. When using either the balanced orunbalanced input, make sure that no cables or equipment areconnected to the unused input, as this may degrade operation. Theunused input does not need to be terminated and this should not bedone.Balanced AudioFor connection to the balanced XLR outputs of suitable pre-amplifiersthat have this kind of output (such as our own 840E model). The pre-amplifier used should be capable of providing at least 1V rms of outputper phase (i.e. at both of + and terminals of the XLR, more is alsofine). Nearly all modern pre-amplifiers fulfill this requirement.Unbalanced AudioFor connection to the normal (single ended) RCA/Phono outputs of asuitable pre-amplifier (such as our own 840E model). The pre-amplifierused should be capable of providing at least 1V rms of output (more isfine). Nearly all modern pre-amplifiers fulfil this requirement.Input Type switchUse to select a balanced or unbalanced connection type for the input.Stereo/Mono mode switchSwitches the 840W between normal Stereo operation (where one840W is used for a pair of speakers) and Mono operation (where two840Ws are used one for each speaker). Refer to later sections of thismanual for more information.Mono mode switchWhen Mono mode has been selected, switches the 840W between Bi-Amped Mono and Bridged Mono. Refer to later sections of this manualfor more information.Control BusIn - Allows un-modulated commands from multi-room systems or othercomponents to be received by the unit.Out -Loop out for Control Bus commands to another unit. The 840W can also be switched between On and Standby mode byconnecting the Control Bus output of an 840E pre-amplifier to theControl Bus input of the 840W. Refer to the Power syncing section ofthis manual for more information.Trigger In, Out/ThruFor Custom Install use, the 840W can be turned on and off (i.e. broughtin and out of Standby mode) by the presence of 5-12V DC at the Triggerinput. A trigger input will also produce an internally generated 12V DCtrigger output at the Output/Thru connection. Turning the 840W on fromthe front panel also produces a 12V DC trigger output at theOutput/Thru connection. This can be used to turn on/Standby otherconnected power amplifiers or other equipment if desired. Refer to thePower syncing section of this manual for more information. IR (Infra-Red) Emitter InAllows modulated IR commands from multi-room systems or IR repeatersystems to be received by the unit. Commands received here are notlooped out of the Control Bus. Refer to the Custom installation sectionfor more information. AC power socketOnce you have completed all connections to the unit, plug the AC powercable into an appropriate mains socket then switch on. Your unit is nowready for use.Power On/OffSwitches the unit on and off. If the 840W is not going to be used for longperiods of time it should be turned off using this switch.116523414321011987234567891011Cambridge Audio Azur 840W Power AmplifierRear Panel Connections5For your own safety please read the following important safetyinstructions carefully before attempting to connect this unit to the mainspower supply.
